Azerbaijani Railways to receive ultra-modern automation system and refuse from mechanical points

Baku, Fineko/abc.az. CJSC Azerbaijani Railways (ADY) will receive ultra-modern automated system of alarm and traffic control.

Informed sources say that the government gave preference to a "smart system" in the choice of contractors for upgrade of the alarm system and automatic control.

"The unique system is equipped with computer chips and will enable to refuse fully from the use of mechanical and semi-automatic points for the transfer of tracks. Moreover, it will allow to transfer points (arrows) almost on any section of Baku - Boyuk Kesik line from ADY central control system in Baku," the source said.

A similar system is installed by the Azerbaijani contractors within the reconstruction of the Georgian section of Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project. The unique system demanded additional funding, and the government of Azerbaijan has requested funds from the World Bank as part of its Rail Trade and Transport Facilitation Project, in which ADY is the main beneficiary. Official talks are being held today in Baku about additional funding for the project. The Bank proposes to give additional $200-220 million for the project.

In the spring of 2008 the WB Board of Directors approved $450 million on this project for Azerbaijan, which became the Banks largest loan since 1995, when it opened financing for Azerbaijan. The loan was given through the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) for 17 years with 4-year grace period. The project is aimed at improving the quality of rail services, improving financial condition, operating and cost efficiency and capacity of ADY. The project with a budget, which in 2008 was estimated at $795 million, focuses on the development of the corridor to Georgia. After provision of additional funding the lending from the WB totaled $650-670 million.
