Azerbaijan Railways buy first train for Baku-Tbilisi-Kars line
Baku, Fineko/abc.az. CJSC Azerbaijan Railways (ADY) is negotiating for the purchase of the first rolling stock for railway line Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (Iron Silk Way).
ADY spokesman Nadir Azmammadov says that negotiations are underway with leading foreign companies involved in the production of modern rail cars.
"At present, the process is at a stage of negotiations so the names of manufacturing companies are not disclosed. In the first phase it will be purchased 1 train of 10-15 cars," he said.
According to Azmammadov, currently ADY is numbering 367 cars, 181 of which are used for international routes.
"ADY has directed its 50 cars for overhaul to the Dnipropetrovsk repair plant, 15 of which were commissioned for use on international routes. In the future, we plan to upgrade our car fleet in order to improve quality of service and compliance with international standards," Azmammadov said.
It is estimated that in the first stage Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line railway will carry annually 1 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo, and by 2034 the number of passengers will be brought up to 3 million of people, cargo up to 17 million tons. The start date of commercial operation of Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway was postponed for the first quarter of 2014.
