Review of transport sector in Azerbaijan (jan.-sept. 2012)

Construction of transport infrastructure facilities continued both in the capital and various regions of Azerbaijan in September:

- Construction of new Alat-Astara bridge over the Kur River. The bridge will be four-line with total length of 362.92 meters. The bridge will consist of six piers. In total, 48 percent of the work has been completed within the project.

- Construction of the Yenikend-Salyan road section within construction of Alat-Astara-Iran border. Yenikend-

Salyan road with length of 23.4 km will be of the first technical level, and consist of four lines.

Transport sector of Azerbaijan transported 157.3 million tons of cargo in January-September, which is 3.3 percent more than the same period of 2011, State Committee on Statistics said. Some 74.4 percent of the goods from the total amount fell to the private sector.

Some 56 percent of goods were transported by road, 27.5 percent - pipelines, 10.6 percent - rail and 5.9 percent - by sea.

About 1.18 billion people were transported by passenger transport in January-September, which is 8.5 percent more than in January-September 2011. Most of the passengers were transported by road transport (87.7 percent) and metro (12 percent).

Automobile transport takes the lion share in the transport field of the country. Some 87.9 million tons of cargo was transported by road transport, which is 7.7 percent more than in January-September 2011. The volume of passenger traffic totaled 1 billion (increase by 8.8 percent). Some 96.4 percent of the passengers were transported by buses and 3.6 percent - by cars.

Freight turnover by road during the period grew by 7.8 percent compared to the same period of 2011, and passenger turnover - by 9.8 percent.

The Azerbaijan State Railway Department (ASRD) transported 16.7 million tons of various cargo or 3.9 percent more than the same period of 2011.

The number of loaded carriages made up 672 in average per day and unloaded - 557. Average daily load of carriages in the northern direction is 26,600 tons and in western direction 6,300 tons, but in the southern direction - 4,200 tons.

Some 9.3 million tons of cargo was transported by sea in January-September, which is 0.8 percent more than in January-September 2011. The entire volume of transported cargo fell to international operations. The volume of cargo handled at ports of Azerbaijan in January-September amounted to 9 million tons, which is 0.5 percent more than in January-September last year.

Some 61 percent of cargo shipping fell on oil and oil products, while 39 percent on dry cargo. Volume of international transit cargos processed in January-September increased by 2.5 percent. As of Oct. 1, 2012, 65,000 tons of cargo left in the ports for import, which is 36.8 percent more compared to the same period of last year.

In January-September, the export via oil pipelines made up 33.1 million tons. During this period, 76.1 percent or 25.2 million tons of oil was transported via the BTC (data provided by the State Statistics Committee). In January-September Sangachal terminal transported 2.3 million tons of Turkmen oil via BTC.

Transportation via gas pipelines made up 14.1 billion cubic meters or 2.4 percent more compared to January-September 2011. Some 20.9 percent of the transported gas fell on South Caucasus Pipeline. Some 3 billion cubic meters of gas was transported via this pipeline.

Some 1.2 million passengers were transported by air transport in January-September, which is 14.8 percent more than the same period in 2011. Some 1.5 percent of traffic by this kind of transport fell to private sector. The volume of cargo transportation by air was 41,200 tons.

Some 141.7 million people were transported by the subway, increasing by 7 percent.

Some 37.7 million tons of cargo was transported through the Eurasian transport corridor at the territory of Azerbaijan in January-August 2012, which is 6 percent more than the same period of 2011. Some 173.1 million people were transported through the corridor, which is 8 percent more than in January-August 2011.

- Some 12.45 million tons of cargo was transported by transit through territory of Azerbaijan in January-September 2012, the State Customs Committee (SCC) said.

- In the first nine months of 2012, the total volume of investments in Azerbaijan's transport sector amounted to 1.7 billion manat.
